Daily Activities to Support Emergent Multilingual Learners

The Nitty Gritty

Format

At the start of each unit, teachers should print the materials which includes pre-reading activities, three to four books per unit and post-reading activities. Each unit is approximately two to three weeks, thirty to forty minutes per day. Reachable Readers entails speaking and listening directly to a teacher or another student. Reading and writing are paper based.

Materials are Ready to Go!

One of the top priorities is to take pressure off the teacher. The program is very easy to administer. No additional supplies are needed except for what is in the classroom – glue, crayons, scissors and a stapler. A student binder is recommended.

All materials have clear, concise directions. Everything is printable. Pre-reading and post-reading materials are available in black and white. Books are in color.

An option for schools that do not have colored printers is to print the books in black and white and project the digital books that are in color. Alternatively, schools who have subscribed to Reachable Readers can purchase colored books at a low cost.

All books are quick and easy to assemble. Teachers set their computer to print according to directions. Once printed, books simply need to be folded in half.

Accessibility

For each unit, all activities, worksheets, and books are printable and in students’ hands. Student materials are also available as slides.

No Color Printer? That’s Okay!

All pre- and post-reading materials are designed in black and white, with illustrations from around the world!

The thirty-five printable books are in color; however digital books are included for the teacher to display on smart boards, Promethean boards, and other devices.

Easy Assembly

All books are quick and easy to assemble. Teachers set their computer to print according to the directions. Once printed, books simply need to be folded in half.

Big Picture

ALL UNITS

There are ten thematic units that pair language with content. Each unit integrates listening, speaking, reading and writing with regular phonological awareness practice. Reading and writing instruction is systematic and explicit.

In addition to the pre- and post-reading materials there are 35 original books within the series. Texts include fiction (short stories, fantasy, realistic fiction, poetry, humor, and narratives) and nonfiction (narrative nonfiction and informational) that match the language developmental level of the student in the earliest stages of language acquisition.
